When you’re removing carpet on your own, it can be helpful to do so in a particular order so that the job isn’t as difficult as it could be.
– Gather Tools: There are several tools that will make removing your carpet much easier. Gathering these tools before you get started will help you move right along. Some of the tools you will need include a utility knife, pliers, pry bar, and a floor scraper.
– Clear the Room: The next step in getting rid of carpet is to clear the room you’ll be working in. Make sure there is nothing left on the flooring.
– Detach the Carpet: Once you have the space cleared and you’re ready to get rid of carpet, you will have detach the carpet from the tack strips. The tack strips are made of plywood with small nails that the carpet is attached to. You may have to pull up a corner of the carpet with pliers to get it started.
– Cut Carpet: Usually, leaving carpet in one big piece is too much to handle. It is much easier to remove carpet when you use your utility knife to cut it into more manageable pieces. The blade should be new and sharp to make this process easier.
– Remove Carpet Padding: There will also be a carpet pad located underneath the carpet. Using the pliers, pull up the carpet pad and roll it up for removal.
– Scrape Floor: The floor will now have carpet staples all over the floor that will need removed. This is best done with a carpet scraper. You can fairly easily remove the staples as you scrape the tool across the floor. If there are a couple that won’t come out, you will have to use pliers to remove them.
