How to Remove Old Carpet on Your Own

There are several steps to removing your own carpet, but it is a project that is completely doable and can end up saving you a ton of money. Here are the steps to follow:
– Gather Supplies: You will first need to gather some supplies to get the job done. This will include pliers, pry bar, floor scraper, knee pads, gloves, utility knife, dust masks, dumpster and more. With these supplies, the job will be much easier.
– Clean the Space: Next, you need to clean absolutely everything out of the room that you are removing carpet from. Not a thing can be left behind. Once that is done, it is a good idea to vacuum the carpet as this can help keep the dirt, dust and debris to a minimum.
– Pull Carpet from Tack Strips: To effectively remove the carpet from the tack strips, you will need to pull up a little corner. Once you have a corner to grab onto, you can use the pliers to pull it up the rest of the way. Do this until all of the carpet has detached from the tack strips around the perimeter of the room.
– Cut Carpet: Cutting the carpet into smaller pieces with your utility knife is going to make it more manageable. That way, you can throw away smaller pieces at a time and get it through doorways and what not. Be careful when cutting as a utility knife is incredibly sharp and can easily slice through your gloves.
– Remove Carpet Padding: There is a carpet pad beneath the carpet that will now need to be removed. It is stapled down, so it might rip when you’re pulling it up. You will want to use your utility knife to cut this into smaller strips as well.
– Remove Tack Strips: The tack strips around the perimeter of the room will need to be removed with a pry bar and hammer. They will break, but need to be pulled up.
– Remove Staples: You will also need to remove the hundreds of staples in the subfloor that held down the carpet pad. This is done with the floor scraper and is fairly easy to accomplish.
