On average, carpet will alt between 5-10 years before it needs to be replaced with something new. Carpet isn’t one of those things that will last forever. However, it will make your home feel more cozy than some of the other flooring options that are popular right now. When you’re getting ready to have new carpet installed in your home, you might find that you can save a bit of money by removing the old carpet on your own. Mickey’s Carting is here to share some tips to make the process as efficient as possible.

Steps to Tear Out Old Carpet

Tearing out old carpe to make space for new is a process that can be smooth as long as you do it methodically and with a little bit of prep. Here are some tips that will make it easier for you.
– Rent a Dumpster: The best way to get rid of the old carpet in your home is to rent a dumpster to dispose of all of it. You will be shocked at how much space old carpet and an old carpet pad can take up. The best way to get rid of it is with a dumpster rental.
– Start in a Corner: When you get ready to remove the carpet, start in one corner and pry it up using some pliers. This will separate it from the tack strip and it should come up remarkably well.
– Cut Sections: Don’t try to get rid of it in one piece. It will be easier to manage if you are cutting it into more manageable sections. Cut from the back of the carpet as this is where the backing is and it is much easier that way.
– Roll & Tape: You will want to roll up the sections of carpet that you remove and then tape the roll shut. This will make it easy to throw into your dumpster rental to get rid of.
– Remove Padding: Now you will have carpet padding that needs to be removed. It is often stapled or glued to the floor. You may have to remove it using a floor scraper, but you can also try to pry it up with some pliers like you did the carpet.
– Remove Tack Strips & Staples: Now you will need to remove tack strips found on the outer edges of the room as well as the staples that are likely found throughout the roof in the subfloor. This is best done with a scraper to easily remove it.
